Responsive web design has become a buzzword on the internet, this is mostly due to the huge number of smartphones and tablets. So what is responsive web design

Wikipedia says

“Responsive web design (RWD) is a web design approach aimed at crafting sites to provide an optimal viewing experience—easy reading and navigation with a minimum of resizing, panning, and scrolling—across a wide range of devices (from desktop computer monitors to mobile phones).”

So what does responsive web design mean to you and your business, well people are accessing your site in different ways, so your site has to respond to these devices. Previously you would have one might have one website for mobiles uses and one for desktop uses with the mobile version being very basic. This meant 2 sites to update and mobile uses feeling quite unloved which could put people of using your company. The main concept of responsive web design is to make a site which works well for all devices. As you only have one site to manage it makes updates and content changes easier to do, it also means that mobile uses can get the same information as desktop uses.

When looking at response web design you have to think about the differences between devices, whether they are mobiles, tablets or desktops. You also have to consider how they are used, you can’t hover over a link on a table or mobile it just be comes a click. The other important factor is internet speed desktops can download large images, but mobile internet won’t like it. When building a site you look at the content and make sure its formatted correctly for devices, this is done using CSS and Javascript to select the correct style for the device that’s being used. By doing this, you can control every aspect of the site to fit the device and offer a quick loading time.
